A Word of Advice: Make most of summer with friends

I’m a junior in high school; well, an outbound junior.

And I (like many of you, I’m sure) have lots of senior friends who will be leaving for college in faraway places in a matter of months. It’s a sad fact of life that friends come and go, through progression, death and countless other reasons. The best thing we can do, when we KNOW the time they plan to depart from our immediate lives, is to make the most of the time we’ve got before that deadline rolls around.

Given that most of the time there’s a large summer vacation block before that date, there’s lots we can do with our old pals before they leave their hometowns to grow up and do things.

While it can be hard even in the summer to amass a large period of shared free time with friends, given summer jobs, summer assignments and other vacation-wasters, if you can get any decent chunk of time to spend with college-bound friends, there’s plenty you can do to make memories for them to hang onto after they leave.

Some people like to plan trips to faraway places for their senior summer, though this can be tough for a multitude of reasons. Both parental oversight and monetary limitations can make a cross-country expedition unrealistic, though it sounds pretty fun, at least in theory.

All isn’t really lost if a long-distance journey isn’t in the cards either way, given the large amount of local stuff there is to do. You can actually replicate the effect of a long, drawn-out trip by dedicating a week to doing things before college, going to do some new activity with each passing day. You might not be physically traversing terrain and staying in strange places, like you would on a long trip, but at the least you’re keeping a good mix of things going on over an extended period of time, and just flat-out spending time together.
