Oneonta student looks to take music industry training in different direction

At a recent concert reception in New York City, I was surprised to meet people who had imminent plans to move to the Otsego-Delaware county area. They explained that our area is so rich in musical and graphic arts that they knew they would enjoy living here.

One of the ways we support the arts in our area is by actively involving our young people in the production of concerts in our local venues. State University College at Oneonta music industry major Kurtis Moffett, an Oneonta native, is a good example of that positive interaction.

As a middle school student, Kurtis played the trumpet, but when he attended Oneonta High School, his teacher, Mr. DePauw, asked him to play French horn. Kurtis was glad to do so for all four years of high school. At the time of his graduation, Oneonta High School had enjoyed a 13-year streak of gold medals for performances at New York State School Music Association competitions.

“I almost went to SUNY Potsdam/Crane for French Horn,” he said, “but I wanted to get a more rounded degree than just performance, so I stayed in Oneonta for the music industry program.”

When asked about his career plans, Kurtis said he was very interested in working to support live concerts. He’ll serve an internship this summer at Oneonta’s Foothills Performing Arts and Civic Center, where he’ll learn how to set up musical events, run the sound board, deal with artist rosters, and deal with artists one-on-one when they’re performing.

SUNY Oneonta music industry internships require preliminary planning between the internship site and the Music Department. Proposed internship duties must be approved by the music industry internship coordinator before registration for the internship, so there is frequent contact between the internship faculty supervisor, the intern and the internship site, providing ample opportunity to design an internship that offers valuable professional growth for the student. The internship site gains the help of a young person who can often help the venue to increase its use of effective marketing via social media, since college students use social media every day of their lives.
