---- — History of Father’s Day
The first records of an official Father’s Day in United States took place near Monongah, W.Va., in 1908 as a community-wide memorial following a coal mining explosion where 362 men perished.
The following year, Sonora Smart Dodd, a proud and ambitious daughter in Washington state, wanted a day to be set aside to honor fathers like her own, similar to the Mother’s Day holiday that had recently been established. Her efforts were successful, as a statewide Father’s Day was established.
In 1916, President Wilson recognized the day, followed by President Coolidge in 1924, but making it a national holiday took almost another half century.
