Crash kills Walton teen

  • Mayoral trio will campaign Saturday
    The SUNY Oneonta student, city alderman and former Hartwick College president running for mayor say they will stump Saturday during the Fourth of July celebration in Neahwa Park.

  • Family activities, parades planned for Fourth
    The area forecast for the July 4 weekend is for showers and fireworks.
    In Oneonta, the 17th annual Hometown Fourth of July Celebration will be Saturday, with activities in Neahwa Park starting at noon and fireworks set off at dusk. The rain date is Sunday, organizers said.

  • Post Office schedule for Fourth of July
    According to the Syracuse office of the U.S. Postal Service, all post offices nationwide will be open today, although most will shorten retail lobby hours and close at noon.
    Hours for the Main Street post office in Oneonta are 8:30 a.m. to noon, according to a notice at the facility.

  • Schumer to FERC: No more NYRI extensions
    Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., has called on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to grant no more extensions to NYRI, a group of investors who want to build an electrical transmission line from Oneida to Orange counties.
    In April, New York Regional Interconnect Inc. withdrew its application to the state's Public Service Commission to build a $2.1 billion power line that could run through Chenango, Delaware and/or Otsego counties. Since then, however, NYRI has asked FERC to review its case, trying to keep the project alive.

  • Selling Otsego Manor discussed at meeting
    COOPERSTOWN _ The idea of selling Otsego Manor, Otsego County's nursing home, was discussed briefly at Wednesday's county board meeting.
    The subject arose after Rep. Donald Lindberg, R-Worcester, apprised board members on the facility's complicated finances.
    Lindberg, who chairs the Otsego Manor Committee, said the nursing home's balance sheet looks better than it really is. When the numbers are traced carefully, and fringe benefits for employees as well as capital costs are added, it appears the Manor costs about $2 million a year in county funds to operate, he said.

  • On the Bright Side: Area man offers a 3-D look at history
    An Otsego County man has brought a new dimension to the study of the Civil War. "The Civil War: A History in 3-D," by Richard Loren Copley of Arnold Lake, is a photographic history of the war between the states _ with a twist. Copley said he uses restored stereo photographs from 1861 to 1865, which he has converted by computer to be viewed through standard 3-D glasses.

    COOPERSTOWN _ Gas drilling and how to get ready for it dominated discussion at Wednesday's meeting of the Otsego County Board of Representatives. At the meeting's start, under privilege of the floor, Adrian Kuzminski of Fly Creek and Paul Mendelsohn of Cherry Valley asked board members to take measures to protect local water supplies and roads.
