As plans for the funeral of Army Cpl. Michael Mayne were being confirmed Friday, the United States military announced several awards earned by the Burlington Flats native.
Mayne, 21, and two other U.S. soldiers died Monday when they came under small-arms fire from insurgents while on patrol in Balad, Iraq.
Mayne, a 2006 graduate of Edmeston Central School, was a member of the 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team.
The unit is part of the 25th Infantry Division based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
Sgt. 1st Class David Fallon of the New York Army National Guard said Friday that Mayne will be awarded the following honors:
The Bronze Star;
The Purple Heart;
The Good Conduct Medal;
The Combat Action Badge;
The Iraqi Service Ribbon Decorated with the Bronze Star;
The Global War on Terrorism Medal;
The Army Service Medal;
The Overseas Service Ribbon.
New York Gov. David Paterson has directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff Monday in honor of Mayne, the first Otsego County resident killed in the war.
Fallon said Mayne's casket is scheduled to arrive at the Syracuse airport from Dover Air Force Base in Delaware at 9 a.m. Sunday.
An Army Honor Guard and others will receive it, and private, full plane-side honors will be performed.
From there, the casket will be escorted by the honor guard, Otsego County deputies and others to the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston.
The convoy will travel down the New York Thruway to Exit 32, then on Route 233 to Bridgewater, and then from U.S. Route 20 to state Route 51.
The viewing will be at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.
The service will begin at Edmeston Central School at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
