Capsule items, past and future

Staff Report

Items in the time capsule found this year hidden at Tobey Hall at SUNY Oneonta give a glimpse of campus life 50 years ago.

A committee of students, staff and faculty will work on supplementing the artifacts with items from current life at the State University College at Oneonta, said Heather Heyduk, college archivist and committee chairwoman.

The historic and current items will be placed into the capsule, which will be sealed into a wall at Tobey Hall later this year.

On Wednesday, several students suggested the items listed below be added to the time capsule:

A course catalog. Heather Rutkowski, an English education major, said that maybe works by Jane Austen were part of the curriculum 50 years ago, but science fiction and technology weren't as mainstream.

Information about student clubs and organizations. Nickeema Cox, 20, a sophomore from Brooklyn studying psychology, said she would like to see the progress of groups 50 years from now.

Photographs of the campus. Tracy Small, 19, a senior from the Bronx studying business economics, said, ``This campus looks different now, even since I was a freshman.''

The Student Research Day program to share information about projects and issues. Tyson Robb, 24, a water resources major from Bloomville, said he did a project on the local Flood of 2006.

Rick Grimaldi, an earth sciences professor, said a computer ``thumb drive'' with stored information, such as weather broadcasts by students, would be interesting. Also, textbooks from sociology, biology and other ``-ologies'' would give perspective on advances between today and 50 years from now, he said.

Heyduk compiled a list of the capsule's contents when it was found, which include:

Blueprint map of Oneonta, 1951, drawn by an assistant city engineer.

A hand-drawn map of Oneonta, from Main Street to West Street to East Street, which includes Old Main, Bugbee, the eating plant, home economics, Morris, Denison, Bacon, and a ``new dorm.''

Article: "Are Small High Schools Worth Saving?" reprinted from the April 1959 issue of Farm Journal.

Catskill Area Project in Small School Design, 1959.

1958-59 estimated expenses for students, which were $1,100. There was no tuition charge at the time.

Staff directory and addendum.

1958-59 "You'll Like Oneonta New York" brochure published by Chamber of Commerce and city of Oneonta.

Panda Prints Valentine's Day card.

College publications, including the catalog for 1959-1961, summer session catalog 1959, general college brochure and a brochure titled "Presenting ... State University Teachers College Oneonta, New York"

Home economics program brochure.

"The Bell" Freshman Handbook.

Student publications, including Scope _ Fall-Winter 1957-58.

SUNY publications, including two versions of "Welcome to our Campus!" "Do You Know Your State University," "Summary Bulletin 1958-59" and "State University Teachers Colleges."
