Staff Report

A Burlington Flats couple are spending a couple of days with their daughter as they clean up from a Friday fire, fire officials said.

The home of the Thompsons, who live on Arnold Road, in the Edmeston fire district, received mostly smoke and water damage from the fire that began shortly after 1 p.m., said Edmeston Second Assistant Fire Chief Scott Convis. He did not have the couple's first names.

The fire started when the woman was burning papers in the backyard. The blaze got out of control, spreading first to a nearby shed, which was destroyed, he said.

The department made a good stop, he said, by limiting the fire damage to a scorched back wall of a garage that is attached to the house and some rafters above that, he said. He did not know if the couple were insured, he said.

He cited the danger of burning anything outside with conditions being as dry as they are, he said.

The department received mutual aid from fire departments from Garrattsville and West Exeter.
