ONEONTA _ More than 100 students at Hartwick College will present academic and artistic projects during an inaugural event at the Oneonta campus Friday.
Some of the projects in the Inaugural Community of Scholars Showcase draw on aspects of life in Oneonta, organizers said. Other activities include a glass-blowing demonstration, chamber choir performance and a 6 p.m. reception for college President Richard Miller, who is retiring.
The community is invited to the programs, exhibits and activities, which start at 9 a.m. and conclude at 6 p.m. and will be at Anderson Center for the Arts, the Johnstone Science Building and Frisbee Field. The college has canceled classes so that students may attend.
At 9 a.m., ``Table Talks: Bettering Communities and Education'' will be in the Anderson Center. The hourlong session will present research projects conducted in the greater Oneonta community and a profile of academic accomplishments of Hartwick student athletes, college officials said. Projects in this session in the Anderson Center that relate to Oneonta or the Hartwick communities include:
ä "Pine Lake Sustainability Poll."
ä "Making It Real: Learning Collaboration Between Pre-Service Teachers and Riverside School Third Graders."

``We're looking for works that demonstrate students' opinions and works they're proud of,'' Katrina Zalatan, dean of experiential and integrative learning at Hartwick, said in a prepared statement. ``It's a student's day, not only to share their work with their majors, but for all students on the same day to see what liberal arts and sciences is really about.''
Hartwick, a private college, enrolls 1,480 students. Recipients of scholarships, awards and other honors also were invited to present projects Friday.
Hartwick's Chamber Choir will perform Antonin Dvorak's ``Moravian Duets'' at 2:30 p.m. in the Anderson Theatre. From 4:15 to 6 p.m., students will perform ``The Last Five Years: A Student-Created Musical.''
