ONEONTA _ The city is accepting applications for the 2008 Community Gardens.

The program will allow Oneonta residents to obtain small plots from the city at a garden on Wilcox Avenue in the Sixth Ward next to the Swart-Wilcox House.

Participants will be able to plant vegetables, fruits, herbs or flowers of their choosing.

The land for the garden is being tilled by the city, and water will be provided throughout the growing season, according to city officials.

A small deposit will be required to lease a plot from the city. Preference will be given to city residents.

Those who receive plots, which will be fenced in, will be responsible for maintaining them throughout the season, city officials said.

For more information, call the city recreation office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 432-0680.

Applications are available at the Brenner Recreation Building in Neahwa Park and the city clerk's office at City Hall. They are also available online at www.oneonta.ny.us.
