A Schoharie County man was arrested last week after he allegedly broke into a woman's home in the town of Wright and was later found with stolen explosives.

Barton L. Schanz, 19, of Schoharie, was charged with several felonies and is being held on $25,000/$50,000 bond after his arraignment in Cobleskill Town Court.

A 94-year-old woman reported that a man had entered her home early Thursday morning. When troopers responded, they found Schanz inside his vehicle, troopers said.

Food and other items from the woman's home were recovered from Schanz, and 10 16-inch sticks of dynamite, blasting caps and a detonation cord were found inside his trunk, troopers said.

Dynamite is used in demolition, construction and mining.

The investigation later found Schanz had broken into a garage in the town of Middleburgh and taken the explosives, troopers said.

Schanz was charged with two counts of second-degree burglary for twice breaking into the woman's home and third-degree burglary and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon for the explosives theft, troopers said.
