Peet Hook Days set in Edmeston

EDMESTON _ Area residents will gather in Edmeston this weekend as the town celebrates its 200th birthday with activities during Peet Hook Days.

The town's museum, situated on state Route 80, will be open Saturday for a look at the town's history, and Edmeston Central School will be transformed into a county fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The day will start at 7 a.m. with breakfast at the Second Baptist Church, with activities later moving to the school.

Antique gasoline engines and antique and classic cars will be on display in the parking lot, and an antiques roadshow will be put on by Pete Gregory and Mary Ann Thompson of Gatehouse Antiques, who will do appraisals for $5 per item.

Traditional games will be held in the school's gymnasium, with performances by folk singer John Farrel at 11 a.m. and the Pathfinder Bell Ringers at noon.

The Farmers' Place will provide barbecued meats for the event.

Activities will continue at 1 p.m. Sunday with old-fashioned baseball games at the school, and at 3 p.m., the Benjamins will perform in concert at the Second Baptist Church. The 4 p.m. finale will be ice cream at the school's cafeteria.

This year's Peet Hook Days, a title derived from Edmeston's former name, has a special historical emphasis as the town was formed April 1, 1808.

Bicentennial memorabilia will be on display and for sale this weekend.

The bicentennial celebration will continue in July, when Otsego County's annual Firemen's Convention will be held in Edmeston in honor of the town on the county's western border.
