May 22, 2009 04:00 am ONEONTA _ Hartwick College's Department of Nursing will honor Dr. Linda Reckhow Thomson, class of '72, of Ludlow, Vt., as this year's Distinguished Nursing Alumnus during a pinning ceremony today in Dewar Union on campus. The award is given each year to a nursing alum in recognition of his or her achievements and excellence in the field through contributions to practice, research, education and service. After receiving her nursing degree from Hartwick, a media release said, Thomson continued her education, receiving her pediatric nurse practitioner degree in 1975, master of science in nursing degree in 1977, and doctorate in 2001. She works as a pediatric nurse practitioner and medical hypnotherapist, the college said, and has published works on a variety of subjects in professional journals in the United States, Australia and Europe, as well as chapters for nursing and hypnosis texts. Her research focuses on the effects of hypnotic intervention therapy on pain, anxiety and nausea in epilepsy surgery patients and the effects of mental-skills training on Olympic athletes. It also seeks to change attitudes, behaviors and beliefs of health care professionals concerning hypnosis.
