Area News Roundup: Repairs to begin

Road repairs will be under way on Interstate 88 eastbound between exit 11 for Franklin and Unadilla and exit 12 for Otego beginning at 7 a.m. today, the state Department of Transportation announced in a media release.

Motorists will encounter a passing-lane closure and a reduced speed limit within the work zone, officials said. The work is expected to be completed by 3 p.m., weather permitting.

DOT officials remind motorists that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone, and convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of a driver's license.

Transportation funds granted

The certification of an additional $9.8 million for transportation projects in the Southern Tier, through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, were announced Thursday by Gov. David Paterson, according to a media release.

Among the work was a $1.1 million project to replace signs on state highways in Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, Schoharie and other counties. Signs that are no longer in compliance with federal and state standards will be updated.

Work is expected to be completed in the fall of 2010, according to the release.

"Through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, we have the resources needed to upgrade the Southern Tier's worn infrastructure, which will help reinvigorate local economies and get New Yorkers back to work," Paterson said.

Man sentenced for burglary

DELHI - A Downsville man was sentenced to 11/2-to-3 years in prison in Delaware County Court Tuesday.

Philip E. Wormuth, 32, pleaded guilty on May 18 to attempted third-degree burglary for breaking into a Colchester home and stealing items valued in excess of $500.

Wormuth, who is a second-felony offender, was ordered to pay restitution totaling $586.95 and to stay away from the owner of the home.

No foul play in man's death

WRIGHT _ Foul play is not suspected in the death of a Schoharie County man whose body was found in a submerged car.

At 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Schoharie County deputies responded to a report of a vehicle in a pond in the town of Wright, according to a media release from the sheriff's office.

When the vehicle was removed from the pond, the body of Brian Kolanchick, 42, of Wright, was found inside, deputies said.

Kolanchick lived alone at his home on Middle Road and had not had contact with anyone since Thursday night, deputies said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday, but deputies have not released any further details.

Foul play was not suspected, they said.
