MIDDLEFIELD _ A man who previously lived in Milford and Daytona Beach, Fla., was arrested Tuesday after a joint investigation by Otsego County deputies and the state Division of Parole.

Eugene J. DeCarlo, 29, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree forgery, all felonies.

DeCarlo was arrested at the Willard Drug Treatment Center and charged on a sealed indictment.

The charges stem from the theft of checks from a Milford woman's house last year that were then fraudulently used throughout the county, deputies said in a media release.

DeCarlo forged a check for 50 grams of hydrocodone at a Cooperstown pharmacy and passed another forged check at the Oneonta Wal-Mart, deputies said.

In April 2008, DeCarlo fled New York and went to Florida, where he was arrested for an unrelated burglary and sentenced to jail time. In January, DeCarlo was returned to Otsego County on a parole violation warrant and sentenced to Willard.

DeCarlo was arraigned in Otsego County Court on Tuesday and sent to county jail on $75,000 bail.
