Syracuse firm wins food-service deal for Oneonta schools

ONEONTA _ Meals at city schools will be provided by a different firm next school year.
On Wednesday night, the school board awarded the food-service management bid to Advanced Meal, from Syracuse, during the regular meeting at the Center Street Elementary library.
The company offered the lowest bid at $520,320, said Deputy Superintendent Thomas Austin. It was estimated that the firm will provide 48,650 breakfasts, 202,004 lunches and more than 40,000 snacks during the year, he said.
With the reimbursements that the district will receive from the state and federal government, the school and company will be able to operate the program at a profit, he said. The service had been provided by Aramark food service, which Austin said did not bid.
In other business, the board set Aug. 23 as the date for a sale of surplus material at the gray barn located at the high school. The time is to be determined.
This is the first such auction in several years, Austin said. The items include used timber, assorted tools, a pingpong table and 11 air conditioners, according to a preliminary listing.
The Valleyview Elementary School PTO will be selling refreshments at what Austin said should be a profitable event.
