No area tornadoes as chilly June ends with thunderstorm

By Denise Richardson
Staff Writer

No evidence of tornadoes was found in Delaware County on Tuesday, a National Weather Service official said, and an observer for Oneonta reported June as the second-coldest recorded.

A tornado warning was in effect between 1:43 and 2:45 p.m. Tuesday in central Delaware and north-central Sullivan counties, said Brian Lovejoy at about 8 p.m. Tuesday. He is a hydrometeorologist in Binghamton.

Downed trees were reported in Morris and Unadilla on Tuesday, Otsego County officials said. But no weather-related problems were reported in Delaware or Chenango counties, dispatchers said.

More showers and thunderstorms are expected today, Lovejoy said, and there are concerns about flash flooding tonight because the ground is saturated.

The weather outlook for the rest of the week is for continued precipitation, Lovejoy said.

David Mattice, a NWS observer, said his gauge in Emmons measured 4.52 inches of rainfall this month through Monday, which was more than the normal for June of 3.62 inches. However, with ``hit-and-miss'' precipitation in the area, some sites had as much as 6 or 7 inches of rain in June, he said.

Temperatures locally made this June the second-coldest month since record-keeping started in 1854, Mattice said Tuesday night. The coldest June was in 1896, he said.

At 61 degrees, June's average temperature was below the monthly average, or mean, of 64.2 degrees, Mattice said. The mercury rose above the 80-degree mark only one day last month, he said, and there were 13 days in June when the temperature didn't rise into the 60s.

By comparison, in May, three days were hotter than 80 degrees, Mattice said, and a four-day stretch starting April 25 yielded temperatures ranging from 83 to 92 degrees. A 92-degree April 27, he said, was the hottest day locally since Aug. 15, 2002.

The possibility of precipitation today is 60 percent, the NWS website said, with rainfall predicted at between a quarter and half an inch. The high temperature is forecast to be 75 degrees, and the low at about 60 degrees.

On Thursday, more showers are likely, with a thunderstorm possible and a high of 73 degrees.
