Area News Roundup: Water warning remains in city

ONEONTA _ Though a first set of tests has come back negative, a boil-water advisory remains in effect for some Bugbee Road residents, the city of Oneonta said Tuesday.

The city water-treatment plant laboratory tested water samples from Monday's water-main break. Those samples tested negative for coliform bacteria, the city said in a media release.

A second set of coliform bacteria samples was collected Tuesday morning and will be tested. The boil-water advisory remains in effect until those test results are reviewed, the city said.

The 42 houses directly affected by the break have been notified by city personnel, the city said. People with questions should call the fire department at 433-3480.

Norwich bridge part of stimulus

NORWICH _ The latest announcement of federal stimulus funding for New York state transportation projects includes a bridge replacement in Chenango County.

The county Route 34 bridge running over Johnson Creek in the town of Norwich is scheduled to be replaced, according to a media release from Gov. David Paterson's office.

The federal stimulus funding will provide $1.2 million of the $1.3 million project cost. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2010.

Richfield Springs mayor resigns

John Garbera II has resigned as mayor of the village of Richfield Springs.

``He resigned for personal reasons, and it's effective today,'' Donna Wells, village treasurer, said Tuesday afternoon.

Garbera, 62, was in the last year of his first full two-year term. He also had served as mayor for several months after the death of former Mayor Leonard Butler in July 2007.

The village Board of Trustees was scheduled to meet Tuesday night to appoint an interim mayor to serve until next spring, when Garbera's term was scheduled to expire, she said.
