The Otsego County Fireman's Convention and a carnival are set for next week in Schenevus, an official said Wednesday.
The Fireman's Carnival will be Thursday, July 16, through Saturday, July 18, at Borst Field in Schenevus, said Richard Kenyon, firefighter and treasurer with the Schenevus Fire Department. Highlights will include an awards dinner this Friday at the VFW in Schenevus and fireworks at the carnival on July 17.
``It's quite an event,'' Kenyon said. He estimated 10,000 people attended last year's fireworks display, which makes for ``a nice family night.''
The carnival will feature musical entertainment, games and rides, he said.
The annual event is the Schenevus department's fundraiser, and this year's goal is to raise $10,000 to $15,000, Kenyon said.
Admission and parking at the carnival are free, he said, and the department raises money through sales of food, games and tickets for rides. On July 16, the local Masons will give tickets for free rides to about the first 1,000 children at the carnival this night, Kenyon said.
Schevevus firefighters, with help from the community, present the carnival, Kenyon said. The department owns the equipment and rides, and no outside carnival workers are hired, he said.
The fireworks show includes ``ground displays,'' which are favored by spectators, Kenyon said.
The carnival opens at 6 p.m., and the schedule includes:
Thursday, July 16: Country Blend performs at 7 p.m. Kenyon said the local Masons will give tickets for free rides to about the first 1,000 children at the carnival this night.
Friday, July 17: Border Line performs at 7 p.m. Fireworks will be at about 9 or 10 p.m., depending on the weather, Kenyon said.
Saturday, July 18: Chicken barbecue at noon; Chinese auction at noon with drawing at 2 p.m.; parade at 6 p.m. The band Route 66 will perform at 7:30 p.m.
