Two face charges in plant vandalism

Staff Report

Two women were charged with misdemeanors Friday night in connection with the vandalism of about 10 planters on Main Street last week.

At some point between 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. July 3, plants were ripped out of the vessels along the north side of the street.

Megan Lottridge, 19, of Edmeston, and Heather Wust, 23, of Edmeston, were each charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and are scheduled to appear July 30 in Oneonta City Court.

Alcohol use may have been a factor, Police Chief Joseph Redmond said Tuesday.

The women were seen by police in the vicinity of the planters at about the time the vandalism occurred, and a subsequent investigation led to their arrests, Redmond said.

The damage to the planters on Main Street has been repaired through the help of donations from Mount Vision Garden Center and Home Depot, Mayor John Nader said Tuesday.

Nader said Main Street Oneonta organizer Nancy Scanlon, city employee Jim Eggler and the Oneonta Federated Garden Club were among those involved in replacing the plants.
