Business Beat: Downtown restaurants set to change locations

August 20, 2008 04:00 am

Two downtown Oneonta restaurants are making arrangements to move.

Elena's Sweet Indulgence at 281 Main St. in Oneonta will close at the end of business at 6 p.m. Saturday, owner Elena Doyle said Tuesday. Plans are to reopen the business in Clinton Plaza during the first week in September, she said.

Meanwhile, Paul Maerz, who recently bought the building at 281 Main St., said he will be reopening his Bella Pockets in the Main Street storefront on or about Sept. 1. Bella Pockets, which features American and Mediterranean food, opened in the lower level of Clinton Plaza in 2003. The restaurant will continue serving at the plaza except Aug. 31, when it will be closed, he said.

Doyle said she will meet her commitments to cater a wedding Friday and a bat mitzvah Saturday but couldn't manage to do two other jobs later this month because of the move. She had been at the Main Street location for about 14 years but recently was renting the storefront on a month-to-month basis.

Dancewear etc. turns 1

Katrina J. Guinn has been celebrating a year in business.

Guinn, who opened Dancewear etc. in the lower level of Clinton Plaza on Aug. 1, 2007, said she is ready for the back-to-school season, which also is time for resuming dance lessons. The store sells dance clothes and bags with dance themes and specializes in the fitting of dance shoes.

Guinn said this month that customers will be entered into a drawing for a $100 scholarship to apply for lessons at the studio of their choice.

The store's hours are from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The telephone number is 267-4738.

PINK: Manpower is tops

Manpower was the only employment services company to be named one of PINK magazine's 2008 Top Companies for Women, according to a media release from the employment firm's office in Norwich.

PINK's annual ranking recognizes the prominent role of women at Manpower, particularly in top leadership roles, the release said. The company offers employers services including permanent, temporary and contract recruitment; training; outplacement; outsourcing; and consulting.

Manpower has been a part of the four-county upstate community for 24 years and serves more than 600 area businesses in Chenango, Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie counties.

"PINK's listing recognizes Manpower's dedication to fostering a culture diverse in thought and experience, and honors the women who provide these strengths," Lori Olsen of Manpower in Norwich said in the release.

PINK solicited nominations from U.S.-based companies and reviewed responsibility levels, programs to retain and advance women and evidence of pay equity, the release said.

The full list will be featured in the magazine's September/October issue, on sale at newsstands Tuesday.
