On Tuesday evening, I experienced one of the best speeches I have ever heard at a Republican convention. It was delivered by a Democrat!
Sen. Joe Lieberman not only did an outstanding job in outlining John McCain's unique qualifications to be president, but contrasted them with his opponent's lack of experience and wisdom. While I have always admired Senator Lieberman, I have never been impressed by his speaking ability. Last evening was much different. It was readily apparent his message was from the heart.
Both Lieberman and President Bush, who spoke by satellite, emphasized McCain's maverick style, his courage and his ability to withstand pressure as positive signs he can and will change the way business is done in Washington. President Bush spoke from firsthand experience, as he has sometimes been on the receiving end of McCain's independent streak. He also credited the senator with his early and strong support of the military surge, which is credited for turning around the situation in Iraq.
Also speaking last evening was former Sen. (and "Law & Order" star) Fred Thompson. As expected, the senator gave a great performance. He was humorous and folksy, particularly in comparing the Democrat and Republican tax policies. Referring to the Democrats' claim that only businesses and not individuals will pay more under their plan, he stated: "Unless you buy something from a business,' like groceries or clothes or gasoline ... or unless you get a paycheck from a big or a small business,' don't worry ... it's not going to affect you."
As for today, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Gov. George Pataki both spoke this afternoon at a luncheon meeting of the New York delegation. These days, it is not often they share a stage anywhere. While both of them received a warm welcome and standing ovations, it was Pataki who impressed the audience with his stirring message. It was vintage Pataki that we haven't seen since his first term as governor. Personally, I'm glad he's back.
Also attending today's luncheon was former Secretary of State Sandy Treadwell, now a candidate for Congress in the 20th District, which includes several towns in Otsego County. Sandy, who lives in Essex County, was my constituent when I represented Lake Placid and Cooperstown in the same Assembly district.
This morning, I bumped into an old friend, Tucker Carlson, who is now with MSNBC. He indicated he is impressed with Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin. I hope to find out for myself this evening. Perhaps once the news media gets over its obsession with her family situation, the American people will also be able to judge her on her qualifications and experience.
Only time will tell. More on this tomorrow.
