September 05, 2008 04:00 am The Oneonta City School District was honored Wednesday for the success of its recent participation in an energy savings program, school officials said. It received the Energy Pacesetter award from an official from Energy Education Inc, of Texas, at the start of a superintendent's conference, said district energy manager Janice Pidgeon. The district signed a four-year contract with Energy Education in 2007. Through the program, it has cut utility costs 29 percent in the first 13 months, for a $243,416 savings. Participation began July 1, 2007, said Jan Noel-Smith, the company's director of public relations. The school's costs for participation in the program were about $100,000, school officials previously said. Oneonta Superintendent Michael Shea said the savings over the life of the contract and beyond will provide flexibility in other areas, especially during tight fiscal times.
