Walton man pleads guilty

By Patricia Breakey
Delhi News Bureau

DELHI _ On Monday, one of the six people caught in a drug sweep in the village of Walton on Sept. 22 pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court.

Greg E. Shamus, 21, of Delhi, pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance in a plea agreement in which he will be sentenced to four years in prison.

Shamus allegedly sold morphine on April 24 and 25.

Shamus, who requested that attorney Christopher Wilson be assigned to his case, said he wanted to be sentenced as soon as possible so he could be transferred out of the Delaware County jail.

Wilson represented Shamus when he pleaded guilty on June 30 to a break-in at the Hamden General Store.

Shamus is serving a one-year jail sentence on the charges of third-degree burglary, fourth-degree criminal mischief and unlawfully dealing with a child.

His sentencing on the drug charge is scheduled on Monday.

In another case, a Farmington man pleaded guilty to two counts of driving while intoxicated from separate incidents May 31.

Thomas J. Wyatt, 48, was sentenced to one-to-three years in prison on two counts of DWI and two counts of first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation. His fines totaled $6,000 plus court fees.

Wyatt was charged with DWI in Harpersfield at 3:32 a.m. After posting $1,000 bail, he was stopped in Stamford at 10:05 a.m. and was arrested again on a DWI charge. His blood-alcohol count was .15 during the first arrest and .08 during the second arrest.

In other court business:

ä Phillip K. Betton, 38, of Sidney, was arraigned on a charge of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance for allegedly possessing 46 packets of heroin. He was jailed on $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond and his trial is scheduled for April 20.

ä Nicole R. Holden, 30, of Walton, pleaded innocent to two counts of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance for allegedly selling amphetamine on April 23 and 24. She was jailed on $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond to await trial Jan. 5.

ä Eric Jay Covell, 45, of Walton, pleaded innocent to two counts of fourth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance for allegedly sold methadone on April 23 and May 10. He was jailed on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond to await trial April 20.
