Enrollment record at Delhi

At 2,971 students, SUNY Delhi has broken an enrollment record this fall, officials said.

The total tops the previous high of 2,825 students in 1977, according to a media release from the State University College of Technology at Delhi. It also represents a 7.4 percent increase from last fall, when 2,767 students enrolled at the school.

"SUNY Delhi is entering a new era where our growth is through online and off-campus programs," says President Candace Vancko.

Enrollment figures weren't complete at other SUNY campuses, officials said Thursday.

At Hartwick College, a private school, this term's target was 440 freshmen, and the class numbers 447, compared with 452 last year, officials said. College enrollment is steady at about 1,480 students.

"We strive to keep the freshman class size around 440 so that we can continue to offer small class sizes and a high-quality private education," Larry Malone, vice president for enrollment management at the college in Oneonta.

At SUNY Delhi, more than 10 percent of enrollment now comes through online and off-site programs.

Leading the way is Delhi's online program for registered nurses to earn a bachelor's degree, which was the first of its type in New York state, a SUNY Delhi official said. The program, introduced in January with 20 students, enrolls more than 100 students from as far away as North Carolina.

, Georgia and Korea. Other online programs include veterinary technology management and associate degrees in nursing.

Also, 130 students are pursuing baccalaureate degrees in hospitality management, travel and tourism management, and business and technology management at the college's satellite campus in Schenectady, school officials said.
