Aldermen to host forum on break-ins

ONEONTA _ Two city aldermen are hosting an informational forum on public safety following a series of break-ins at homes in the Sixth Ward.

The forum will be held at 7 tonight at the Sixth Ward Athletic Club and will be hosted by Sixth Ward Alderman Veronica Diver and Third Ward Alderman Erik Miller.

Officers with the Oneonta Police Department are expected to be on hand to offer crime-prevention tips and answer questions from city residents.

No arrests have been made in the break-ins, which occurred last week.

{"headline18"/}Anthropologist to speak at 'Wick

Hartwick College will welcome Professor Elizabeth Brumfiel of the department of anthropology at Northwestern University for a lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday. Brumfiel will give a talk titled "Presenting Aztec Culture: Archaeology as an Antidote to Great Art" in the Anderson Center for the Arts Theatre. The program is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the talk.

Presenters said the talk will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the "Aztec World" exhibit for Chicago's renowned Field Museum.

Brumfiel is an archaeologist with broad interests in social and economic inequality, whether by class, race, gender or sexuality, presenters said. Her primary focus is Aztec culture. She is a prolific author and presenter and served as president of the American Anthropological Association.

The lecture is sponsored by the anthropology department through its Hardy Chair endowed speakers fund. H. Claude Hardy, the first chair of Hartwick's combined anthropology and sociology department, endowed Hartwick College with a fund to establish a lecture series, stipulating that speakers must connect their studies with information of interest to the contemporary community.

For more information, contact Associate Professor of Anthropology Jason Antrosio at 431-4987 or antrosioj@hartwick.edu.

United Way board gives money

In September, the Chenango United Way challenged its board of directors to join area employees and residents in committing to donating $1 per week per year. In a media release, campaign director Bryne Lewis Allport said the full participation of the board would result in $10,000 raised for the United Way.

This week, the Chenango United Way Board reported that it exceeded its goal, raising $12,254.

The Chenango United Way 2010 campaign runs until Dec. 31 with a goal of $465,000.

For more information about donating, call the Chenango United Way at 334-8815 or visit www.chenangouw.org.

The town of Oneonta will collect leaves and brush for four consecutive Mondays, starting Oct. 19 and continuing through Nov. 9. Brush and leaves collected in paper bags will be collected at curbside starting at 8 a.m.

Officials said bags that are too heavy or that contain rocks will not be collected. Large amounts of brush from landscaping projects or tree work may not be collected, officials said.

Town residents may also dispose of leaves and brush behind the town hall in West Oneonta. Free mulch may also be taken from this area. The gate is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

For more information, call the highway department at 432-4581.
