HARPERSFIELD _ An early-morning fire on state Route 23 in Delaware County on Tuesday damaged an apartment building.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, Delaware County Emergency Services Director Richard Bell said.

"They are looking at it as an accidental fire related to an electrical cord that was plugged into a bedroom," Bell said.

The fire damage was primarily confined to the upstairs apartment where the fire broke out, Bell said.

The rest of the building suffered smoke and water damage, he said.

The occupant of the upstairs apartment was alerted to the blaze by the sounds of the fire and a smoke alarm and was able to safely exit the building, Bell said.

None of the other three apartments were being lived in at the time.

The names of the owner of the building and the apartment dweller were not available.

Firefighters from Stamford, Franklin, Davenport, Jefferson, Hobart and Oneonta responded.

No injuries were reported.
