Parts of Pine Street to be closed today

ONEONTA _ According to a news release from Jett Industries, Pine Street between Potter Avenue and Main Street will be closed today and Monday for repair work to Oneonta Creek.

St. Mary's to host blood drive

ONEONTA _ St. Mary's School will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. The blood drive is open to the public.

Donors must bring a Red Cross blood-donor card or another form of identification and meet other guidelines established by the Red Cross.

The school is on state Route 7. To make an appointment, call 432-1450 or e-mail nursesms@yahoo.com.

Supporting area businesses to be discussed

DELHI _ "Building Local Living Economies: A New Model for Economic Development" will be presented at 2 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall in Delhi.

Guest speaker Michael Shuman of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economics will give the presentation, followed by a question-and-answer session, book signing and local-foods reception. This event is free and open to the public.

Shuman, author of "The Small-Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses are Beating the Global Competition" and "Going Local: Creating Self-Reliant Communities in the Global Age," will discuss how locally owned businesses can thrive and how local governments can support them.

Candidate announces run for town clerk

FRANKLIN _ Betsy B. Babcock has announced her candidacy as a write-in candidate for Franklin town clerk.

According to a news release, Babcock has a master's degree in business health care administration and more than 20 years of business ownership experience.

She and her husband, Bryan, own and operate Handsome Brook Farm. She is also a global bureau relations manager for an international payroll company.

The release said Babcock's goal as town clerk will be "to provide improved access to information for all Franklin residents through the use of Internet and written communication, and improve communication within Franklin with regard to issues that affect the community."

CCE to offer free day-care training on Sat.

HAMDEN _ On Saturday, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County and Delaware Opportunities will offer free day-care-provider training titled "Trash to Treasures."

The training, held at the Cooperative Extension Resource Center on state Route 10 in Hamden, will focus on re-purposing household items that are ordinarily viewed as disposable into interesting toys and games for children. Nutrition information and the "Eat Three: Eat Well, Eat Local and Eat Together" campaign will also be highlighted.

Training credit hours will be available in Principles of Early Childhood Development, Child Day Care Program Development and Nutrition & Health Needs of Children. The hands-on workshop will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. To register or for more information, call 865-6531.
