Boards of election around the state have begun counting absentee ballots and other paper ballots as they work toward tallying final election results.

Most races are decided, but no one has conceded in the 24th Congressional District contest between first-term Rep. Michael Arcuri, D-Utica, and Republican challenger Richard Hanna of Otsego and Barneveld.

Unofficial results in this race show Arcuri received 118,640 votes to Hanna's 112,244 on machines throughout the 11-county district. Hanna's campaign estimates that as many as 16,000 absentee, military and affidavit ballots were also cast. Arcuri has estimated that outstanding ballots total 9,000, and he has declared victory.

On Thursday, Lucinda Jarvis, Otsego County's Democratic deputy elections commissioner, said the local board was about halfway through counting about 2,000 paper ballots. County totals may be available today, she said.

Hanna said Tuesday that he does not anticipate final results for the district will be tabulated until next week.
