A former Edmeston resident was arrested Thursday for setting more than 17 fires in Plattsburgh since Easter morning in 2006, Plattsburgh police said.
Matthew Card, 24, of Plattsburgh, also confessed to starting a fire in Edmeston when he was home on a school break in June 2006, police said.
He has been charged with four counts of third-degree arson, a class C felony, for intentionally starting fire to buildings or motor vehicles, and second-degree arson, a class B felony, for starting a fire at a building where he should have known people were inside, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
Otsego County Sheriff Richard Devlin said Friday night that Plattsburgh police have contacted county agencies about the arrest, but he was not aware of outstanding arrest warrants for Card in the county or open arson cases similar to the one to which he confessed. Devlin said he will be looking into the situation next week.
The break in the case came early Thursday morning, Plattsburgh police said, when Card was captured on surveillance cameras lighting a garbage fire on Protection Avenue, and then attempting to attempting to light a vehicle on fire on Court Street.
He was detained for questioning and confessed to the fires that included the four Easter morning fires set in 2006, when he was a student at SUNY Plattsburgh.
Card was in Clinton County jail on Friday, having been arraigned that day, and a detective was not on duty to discuss the case, a Plattsburgh police officer said.
