Brewery Ommegang of Milford has been awarded a $4,000 grant to help plan an environmentally responsible expansion project, according to Scott Fickbohm, manager of the Otsego County Soil and Water District.
The money, awarded by the Southern Tier Regional Planning and Development Board and the local soil and water district, will be used to minimize the project's environmental impact, Fickbohm said Tuesday.
The expansion will incorporate a water-permeable parking lot and a sod, or ``green'' roof to minimize runoff. The roof also will conserve energy, and an on-site power plant that uses brewing byproducts will help reduce the use of other fuels, he said.
Other businesses planning remodeling or construction may contact his office to learn how to do so in an environmentally sensitive way, Fickbohm said.
``Ommegang's low-impact plans demonstrate that commercial development and environmental stewardship do not have to be mutually exclusive,'' he said.
The office's telephone number is 547-8337.
