A 35-year-old man on a construction crew from a Whitney Point firm was in critical condition late Tuesday night after an accident at Delhi's elementary school, officials said.
University Police, who were dispatched by Delaware deputies to the scene at 5:59 a.m., identified the worker as James Cornelius, said State University College of Technology at Delhi spokesman Joel Smith. He said he did not know where Cornelius lived.
Cornelius was helping put on a new roof as part of an elementary school project and apparently stepped onto a skylight, falling 25 feet onto a gym floor, said Delhi school Superintendent Jack Mulholland.
Cornelius works for AB Construction and Roofing in Whitney Point, which is "very efficient" in its early start times, Mulholland said.
Alan Bennett, president of AB Construction, did not return two phone calls for comment. There was no phone book listing for Cornelius in the Whitney Point area.
Cornelius was taken to O'Connor Hospital in Delhi by the Delhi Fire Department with multiple trauma, said assistant chief Shawn Kauffman. Cornelius was transported to Bassett by CMT ambulance because fog prevented an airlift, Kauffman said.
