Hartwick hosting Clean Sweep Day Saturday

The town of Hartwick will hold its annual Clean Sweep event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Clean Sweep began as a community project to clean up trash, but the event has grown to include more cleanup opportunities.

Competition will be held for the “Most Bags of Roadside Trash Collected,” the “Oddest Item Found,” the “Best Team Spirit” and the “Best Pokey Stick.” Cooperstown Bat Company will donate a personalized engraved mini-bat to winners. All participates will receive a free ice cream cone at the Barnyard Swing.

The town will be collecting used electronics such as desktop computers, laptops, keyboards, power cords, chargers, mice or similar pointing devices, small electronics, including VCRs, DVRs, DVD players, cable receivers, digital converter boxes, game consoles, PDAs, portable digital music players, and other personal e-devices, TVs, computer monitors, printers, fax machines and scanners.

Residents should not to bring hazardous materials such as paint and batteries. The county’s Hazardous Waste Day is Saturday Sept. 14, at the Meadows. Electronics can be brought to the transfer station in Fly Creek at any time.

The town cautions residents not to bring household garbage during this event.

Participants in the roadside cleanup can use their own supplies or they can come to the Town Hall at 9 a.m. Saturday to pick up trash bags, gloves and safety vests. Once roadside litter is collected, full bags can be left along the road to be collected by volunteers, but it’s preferable if people bring bags of roadside litter to the dumpster located at the Town Hall.

Any individual or group interested in volunteering is asked to call town councilwoman Juli Sharratt at 293-7324.
