Motorist rolls truck, charged with drunken driving

Staff Report

A motorist who continued driving after his truck rolled 360 degrees in Summit early Monday was charged with drunken driving, state police at Cobleskill said.

Elijah S. Jacobson, 21, of Jefferson, was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer, driving while intoxicated, unlawful possession of marijuana, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment and various vehicle and traffic offenses.

A 360-degree rollover during a police chase is rare, troopers said, and they described the incident in a media release as follows:

Cobleskill troopers saw a red Chevrolet pickup traveling south on state Route 10 in the town of Summit at about 1:30 a.m. Monday, and it was swerving back and forth on the roadway. Troopers activated patrol-car lights and the siren and tried to pull the driver over, but the motorist refused and instead accelerated.

About half a mile down the road, the vehicle ran off the right side, and the vehicle rolled over, landed upright and continued down the road as the driver tried to evade authorities.

The truck went another quarter-mile, then traveled off the road into a field for about a mile before becoming mired in a swamp. Troopers took Jacobson into custody near the truck.
