Concerts, performances, dances, events bring spring to area

On May 17 the Oneonta Concert Association will host Grammy Award-winning jazz bassist Ron Carter and the Golden Striker Trio at its 85th Anniversary Gala at Foothills Performing Arts Center.

Watch a movie come to life on stage when Orpheus Theatre presents the musical “Legally Blonde” at the Goodrich Theatre on the SUNY Oneonta campus May 11 and 12.

The Fenimore Art Museum comes back to life in the spring, this year starting with exhibits such as “American Masters: Thomas Cole to Grandma Moses” and “Native Roots: The 9th Contemporary Iroquois Art Biennial.” More exhibits open in May, and the museum hosts the Iroquois Cultural Festival at the end of the month, which complements the Eugene and Clare Thaw Collection of American Indian Art. The festival will highlight select Iroquois artisans, story tellers, dancers and interpreters, and the weekend will feature a concert by Iroquois singer and composer Joanne Shenandoah.

Maybe the change of the season will inspire us to do a little performing of our own. Trade your snow boots for some dancing shoes and join the Otsego Dance Society on May 3 for some contra dancing at the Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown. No experience is needed because all dances are taught. Or, check out the Roxbury Arts Group’s open mic nights on the first Friday of each month at 76 MAIN! Musicians are encouraged to drop in and play for the community.

I’m prepared for spring with my rain boots and umbrella, but I also have my tickets to Old Crow Medicine Show and I’m thinking of throwing on some dancing shoes too. So while we prepare for the next phase of upstate New York weather, we can also prepare for the events that accompany the new season as well.
