Unadilla horse goes missing

A Unadilla woman is looking for the public’s help in finding a red and white paint mare that has been missing since Monday afternoon.

Melinda Memoli said she got the 8-year-old horse, Spirit, about two weeks ago. Somehow it escaped from the electrified fence enclosure at her house at 802 county Route 3A. She saw it at 4 p.m., but her husband noticed it missing at 5 p.m.

She contacted the animal control officer and state police about the situation.

Unadilla animal control officer Julia Van Steenburg said she advised Memoli to get the word out as quickly as possible about the situation. She has been in the business for years and the animals get loose all the time. A new animal in particular may try to return home.

Memoli will be following the officer’s advice and scouting the local horse auction to make sure the animal doesn’t somehow end up there.

Anyone with information about Spirit is asked to call Memoli at 369-3488.
