Week in Review: Gibson dumps tax pledge; local gun stores get Obama bump

This weekend feature offers a recap of the week’s top local stories:

MONDAY

The horse ridden from Schenevus to Oneonta a week ago was euthanized Friday because of hoof injuries, Oneonta police said.

Donald Lane of Schenevus said the death was like losing a family member. The police department, which has charged Lane with animal abuse and said he didn’t own the horse, is harassing him, Lane said Sunday.

In sports: Kyle Bradley and Jared Suderley scored 20 points apiece Sunday as the Hartwick College men’s basketball team rolled to a 94-61 non-conference victory over visiting Wells College.

TUESDAY

Sales of firearms and ammunition have spiked since President Barack Obama’s re-election, local gun-shop owners said Monday.

“It’s big-time gone through the roof,” said Jim Losie of Losie’s Gun Shop in Oneonta. “The biggest problem right now is just getting the stuff, because the manufacturers can’t keep up with the … demand.”

In sports: Junior guard Kristin Pappalardo scored a team-best 16 points Monday for Oneonta State, which held host Utica College to eight points in the second half of a 59-29 non-conference women’s basketball triumph.

WEDNESDAY

More than a year after he took a pledge to refuse to support any tax increases, newly re-elected Rep. Chris Gibson, R-Kinderhook, confirmed Tuesday he is on a new path — one that does not include embracing conservative Grover Norquist’s push for holding the line on taxes regardless of the consequences.

In sports: Is there such a thing as November Madness?

There is in Laurens, where the Leopards boys basketball team opened its season Tuesday with a 56-53 overtime defeat of Harpursville.

THURSDAY

Michael Breen of Middleburgh was appointed special prosecutor Wednesday in the case of a former Walton teacher accused of having sex with underage students.
