Heavy rain, hail hit area

The Daily Star

---- — staff report

Heavy rains pounded through the area Wednesday night with the National Weather Service warning of tornadoes and urging residents to seek shelter.

However, no reports of tornado sightings were confirmed by 9:45 p.m., and there were no injuries or major problems reported to dispatchers in Otsego, Delaware or Chenango counties.

Some power outages were noted on a map at the New York State Electric and Gas Corp. By 10 p.m., 98 Chenango County customers were listed without electricity, and numbers were 109 in Otsego County and 47 in Delaware County.

The storms resulted in reports throughout Otsego of trees and wires down, county dispatchers said. There were about five reports by Chenango County residents of golf-ball-sized hail.

In the city of Oneonta, some instances of standing water developed but cleared within about 10 minutes, Capt. Robert Latourette said late Wednesday. Latourette said he had heard earlier about flooding near the intersection of state Route 28 and Frank Slawson Road in Franklin.

Police scanner chatter late Wednesday night concerned water on roadways, but by 9 p.m. no official list of road closures had been compiled, according to Delaware County dispatchers.

However, a Meridale fire official said state Route 28 was open but warned motorists to be cautious of debris and water in roadways.

More hazardous weather may develop in the days ahead, according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton.
