Police seek leads in East End robbery

State police at Oneonta are seeking public assistance in a reported armed robbery that occurred Saturday at the Convenience Express at 5374 State Route 7 in Oneonta.

At about 8:40 p.m. a white man, approximately 6 feet to 6 feet, 2 inches tall, medium build, wearing a full face mask, a dark hooded sweatshirt with Monster and Fox Racing logos across chest, entered the store and stole an undisclosed amount of money, troopers said. The investigation was still ongoing, troopers said. There was no one available at the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation to provide additional information on Sunday night.

Convenience Express associate Shawn Dascher said Sunday that he was the only person working Saturday at the convenience store in Oneonta’s East End when the incident took place. The man had a handgun in the waistband of his pants, though it was never drawn, he said.

Dascher said he saw the man approaching the store on foot, wearing a neoprene face mask, black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, black and yellow gloves and yellow construction boots.

While the reported robber’s appearance seemed odd, it was chilly at the time, Dascher recalled. The man, who had a “raspy” voice, talked to Dascher briefly before handing him a note across the counter.

Dascher said he saw the phrase, “I have a gun,” and the word “money” on it, and looked up to see the man raising his shirt and putting his hand on the pistol. The clerk gave the man all the paper money in the tray, lifting up the drawer at the man’s request, before the man left.

After waiting briefly, Dascher went to the door and saw the masked man walking away, toward the city of Oneonta. The clerk then locked the door of the convenience store and called 911, his managers, and his wife. The first trooper arrived in minutes, Dascher said.
