Longtime area retailer Stevens dies at 94

(Continued)

In the 1940s, lumber companies and building suppliers began to sell hardware and Stevens Hardware cut back on selling general hardware and expanded into selling boats and sporting goods. Through the decades, the store’s stock has ranged from nuts and bolts to camping equipment, snowmobiles, shoes and toys.

The store announced a going-out-of business sale in anticipation of a Nov. 1 closing.

Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, and a service will be at 1 p.m.
