'A Christmas Carol' coming to The Farmers' Museum|

The Smithy Center for the Arts and The Farmers’ Museum are trying to start a new Cooperstown Holiday tradition this December.

On Dec. 15 the Smithy Center for the Arts’ Glimmer Globe Theatre will perform “A Christmas Carol” at the Louis C. Jones Center at The Farmers’ Museum.

“This is our first collaboration (with The Farmers’ Museum), so it’s actually really exciting,” said Danielle Newell, executive director of the Smithy Center for the Arts.

Newell, who is also the play’s director, adapted the play along with Michael Henrici, the Glimmer Globe Theatre’s artistic co-director, from Charles Dickens’ classic novel.

When asked about co-writing the script, Newell said that they tried to use a much of Dickens’ dialogue as possible.

“Dickens made it so easy for us to adapt it,” said Newell, praising the great writer’s prose. “It’s a very traditional adaptation.”

The Glimmer Globe production has a cast of 17, including Newell and Henrici, and features both professional actors and those with no acting experience. Newell said that they had held well attended auditions, and had tried to strike a balance between the number of professional and amateur performers cast, seeking to involve people from throughout the community.

“All these people are wonderful,” said Newell,

Newell also praised The Farmers’ Museum and noted the rich history that underlies much of Cooperstown.

“We’re all I think really excited about doing a show that’s so steeped in tradition in such a wonderful wonderful venue,” said Newell.

The show will be performed on Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. Excerpts will also be performed on Dec. 14 at The Farmers’ Museum’s Candlelight Evening.

Despite its brief run this year, Newell has every intention of bringing “A Christmas Carol,” back to The Farmers’ Museum in 2014.

“Our goal is to make this an annual event,” said Newell. “This is just the beginning.....of a new Cooperstown tradition.”
