Laurens woman still in serious condition

A Laurens woman missing for two days after wandering away from her home Saturday remains in serious condition.

Clara "Dolly" Layman, 73, was found by volunteer firefighters at around noon Monday after spending two nights in the woods near her home on Mather Road. Layman has Alzheimer's disease and could not recall how she got in the woods, according to state police.

She remained in serious condition, Bassett Medical Center spokeswoman Karen Huxtable said Tuesday night.

A massive search organized by New York State Forest Rangers helped lead to Layman's recovery. She was alert and talking when she was found by firefighters from Otego and Wells Bridge, who were searching a grid sector assigned to them by the rangers about three-quarters of a mile into the woods.

She did not appear to have any serious physical injuries and was suffering from exposure after spending two days in the woods under rainy conditions, troopers said.

Layman may have been out for a walk around a pond on her property when she heard the sound of a nearby music festival, troopers said.
