Week in Review: Otsego treasurer won't seek re-election

This weekend feature offers a recap of the week’s top local stories:

MONDAY

Even the kids knew it was a down year for the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Induction Weekend.

Standing on Pioneer Street, in front of their makeshift business, 13-year-olds Margaret Harmon and Nicole Idelson could tell from their still-full bowl of snacks for sale.

“We usually end up selling something every year,” said Idelson. “This year was harder.”

In sports: Chris Pindar hit a three-run triple Sunday and fellow Oneonta High graduate Mike Calkins earned the pitching win for the Oneonta Outlaws, who opened the New York Collegiate Baseball League’s best-of-three championship series with a 10-5 victory over the Hornell Dodgers at Damaschke Field.

TUESDAY

Citing his ongoing commitment to the U.S. Army Reserves, Otsego County Treasurer Dan Crowell revealed Monday he will not seek re-election this year and instead will throw his support to the county’s acting treasurer, Russ Bachman, an unaffiliated independent.

WEDNESDAY

The Otsego County Fair opened Tuesday with what organizers said was a typical crowd.

“It’s right in the ballpark of what we usually have opening day,” said Judy Harris, who has been managing director of the Otsego County Fair for around 15 years.

In sports: The Cooperstown Hawkeyes’ five-game winning streak was snapped with a 3-0 loss Tuesday at Glens Falls in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League.

THURSDAY

Otsego County GOP Chairwoman Sheila Ross confirmed Wednesday night that her party will field a candidate to run for county treasurer against Russ Bachman, an unaffiliated independent who is seeking the post with help from the Democratic Party.
