Oneonta resident arrested in drug case

An Oneonta resident was arrested on drug charges after a 2½-month narcotics investigation involving city police, deputies and the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Otsego County deputies said.

Joshua John Baerga, 23, was arrested for two counts of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, class B felonies, third-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a class B felony, resisting arrest, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, deputies said in a media release.

Baerga, who was originally from New York City, was on parole for a third-degree burglary conviction, deputies said.

In July, he was indicted by a county grand jury for selling heroin and cocaine in the city of Oneonta the previous month and a sealed indictment arrest warrant was issued.

On Wednesday, investigators located Baerga driving in Oneonta and the following occurred, deputies said:

Baerga was stopped on Elm Street and struggled with officers. An investigation revealed that he was operating a rental vehicle with a learner's permit and was not the licensed driver on the rental agreement. A search produced a small quantity of marijuana and $3,500 in cash.

Baerga was sent to Otsego County jail without bail on the drug charges, deputies said, and a Bronx parole violation warrant was lodged at the jail.

If convicted he faces up to 24 years in prison, deputies said.

District Attorney John M. Muehl is prosecuting the case.
