Extra officers to work St. Patrick’s Day
Oneonta police will add officers Sunday for patrols on St. Patrick’s Day, Lt. Douglas Brenner said, and extra officers may be called in Saturday depending on the weather and activities downtown.
Brenner said city officials are worried about drinking by college students at house parties and at bars towntown. If weather is fair, house parties are more likely, he said. With cooler weather, which is in the forecast, activities tend to be inside, he said.
“As always, we are concerned about large house parties and associated problems,’’ Brenner said. Those problems include noise, litter and instances of excessive drinking and related medical needs.
On Sunday, the typical staffing of four officers will double, Brenner said, and he and Police Chief Dennis Nayor are scheduled for duty. By law, bars cannot open until noon Sundays.
Normal patrols of five officers and a supervisor are planned for Saturday’s 4 p.m. to midnight shift, Brenner said.
