The Oneonta Town Board on Monday approved a 12-month extension of a moratorium on natural gas drilling.
The measure passed in a 3-2 vote during a specially called meeting in Town Hall in West Oneonta.
The law will become effective after being filed with the state Department of State this week, Supervisor Robert Wood said.
Wood and councilmen David Jones and Janet Hurley Quackenbush voted for the extension, and councilmen Scott Gravelin and William Mirabito voted against it.
About 35 people attended the meeting Monday, and many raised signs urging a 12-month moratorium instead of a six-month moratorium, which was an option for the board. Audience members applauded after the moratorium passed.
The moratorium addresses all forms of drilling and associated activities, such as the storage of drilling-related materials. The town board passed a 12-month moratorium last year by a one-vote margin, and that measure expires April 2.
