Week in Review: Cooperstown sued over parking meters

This weekend feature offers a recap of the week’s top local news stories:

MONDAY

Graduating seniors at Oneonta High School were urged by their principal, Nancy Osborn, to “take control” of their futures. “Time will make decisions if you let it,” Osborn cautioned the Class of 2013, which she characterized as “awesome.” The graduation was one of many held in the area over the weekend at local high schools.

TUESDAY

Local legislators reflected on a session in Albany that included battles over gun control, abortion, gambling and tax breaks for businesses. Sen. James Seward, R-Milford, said he is “holding out for full repeal” of the controversial NY SAFE Act, which limits magazine sizes and tightens restrictions on gun ownership. Assemblyman Pete Lopez, R-Schoharie, called the session, which was marred by scandal, a “missed opportunity,” observing that politics too often gets in the way of legislation.

WEDNESDAY

Cooperstown village officials were served with legal papers at a board of trustees meeting on Monday night, as local merchants irked over paid parking have taken their case to the courts. The 27 people who signed on to the lawsuit are arguing that the parking meters have cost them thousands of dollars in unrealized revenue during what is normally a boom time for tourism in the village.

THURSDAY

Local supporters of gay rights were among those cheering on Wednesday when the U.S. Supreme Court handed down two historic decisions favorable to advocates of same-sex marriage. In Cooperstown, gay rights advocate Katie Boardman, an elder at First Presbyterian Church, called the rulings “huge,” adding that they have been “a long time coming.” But Otsego Town Board Member Carl Wenner, a conservative Republican opposed to gay rights, called the rulings “pathetic,” adding that “You cannot be a seriously religious person and think that homosexuality is OK with God.”
