---- — People who want to wish Franklin Free Library director Linda Burkhart a good retirement can do so today at an open house at the library on Main Street.

Linda Burkhart Appreciation Day is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. at the library. Her 30-year career as library director is scheduled to end March 15.

Friends of the Franklin Library President Joyce Fairchilds said with Burkhart’s retirement approaching, the group planned the event because “we just wanted to recognize her for the dedication she has given for 30 years.” That includes finding up-to-date materials, organizing volunteers, or finding grants and staging summer programs.

Throughout all the changes, including the addition of computers, fax, copier and wi-fi, “she was always there,” Fairchilds said, and thanks to Burkhart’s efforts, the library has remained an important town facility.

Library Board President Jim Mullen said she has “a wealth of experience we won’t be able to replace soon.”

Although there are many volunteers, Burkhart is the only paid employee at the facility. The job required her to take on many responsibilities, Mullen said, including such challenges as getting the collection online.

The board has been interviewing someone to fill the job after she leaves. While it won’t be difficult to hire a new library director, “it will hard to replace Linda,” he said.

“Whatever she did, she made it look easy,” he said. “We will miss her very much.”
