An Oneonta man was arrested Tuesday, following an incident earlier this month involving an envelope mailed to Oneonta City Court, Oneonta police said.
James A. Hone, 58, was arrested for aggravated harassment, a Class A misdemeanor, Oneonta police Chief Dennis Nayor said. This came after a Feb. 3 incident when court employees said they opened a letter that had white powder. After steps were taken to limit contamination by the Oneonta Fire Department and other agencies, it was determined by a U.S. Postal Service inspector that the substance posed no hazard, Nayor said. The envelope had Hone’s name and address on it, and no motive has been determined, he said.
Search and arrest warrants were issued by Otsego County Court and Hone was arraigned in Oneonta Town Court on Tuesday, Nayor said. Hone was sent to Otsego County jail on $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond bail.
