Twenty students to vie in regional spelling bee

Twenty students will take the stage Saturday at SUNY Oneonta’s Goodrich Theatre hoping to advance to the National Spelling Bee near Washington, D.C.

The competition starts at 10 a.m. This is the 12th year for the regional competition, DCMO BOCES enrichment coordinator Stacie Haynes said, and each of the participants has won their school competition.

The regional event is open to students in participating schools in grades 5-8 in the Delaware-Chenango-Otsego-Madison and Otsego-Northern Catskills boards of cooperative educational services. Students in private and home schools are also eligible. The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip for them and a chaperone to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held May 25-31 at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Md.

There were 22 students competing at the local event last year when Sidney Central School student Molly Youngs won the competition.

Among the contestants this year is seventh-grader Jasper Millhone of Delaware Academy Central School. School Superintendent Jason Thomson said “we are very proud of Jasper. He represents us well.”

This type of academic competition is always valuable, Thomson said, because it challenges students in such a positive way. “Everybody who participates is a winner,” he said.

The trip is sponsored by The Daily Star and the Otis A. Thompson Foundation. Other sponsors for Saturday’s spelling bee are Amphenol Corp., SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Oneonta Science Discovery Center.
