Black history film to be shown

The PBS film “Slavery by Another Name” will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Cooperstown Graduate Program.

Based on Douglas A. Blackmon’s Pulitzer-Prize winning book, the 2011 documentary looks at the practice of forced African American labor that appeared in the South following emancipation and continued until World War II.

The free film screening is co-presented by the Cooperstown Graduate Program and the New York State Historical Association, and will be followed by community discussion. It is the third film screening in a series titled “Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle.”

The event is free and open to the public, and will be held at the Cooperstown Graduate Program’s building at 5838 State Route 80 in Cooperstown. Call 547-2586 for directions or additional information.
